Next Step in Kratos’ Story.
The reveal trailer was first showcased in a recent live Sony showcase and confirms it will still be set in Norse mythology. Developed by Santa Monica games and published by Sony interactive entertainment for both PlayStation 4 & 5, God of War Ragnarok will be the ninth instalment in the series and judging by the name will play out Ragnarok, the Norse belief that the gods will all fight and the end of the world will happen, as foretold by the death of Baldur the Esir god whom was killed by Kratos in God of War (2018).
Ragnarok was originally intended to be released in 2021 but got delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic and has been announced to be released in 2022 winning awards for most anticipated game from the 2020 Golden Joystick Awards and PlayStation.blog awards.
As stated before, Ragnarok will be set in ancient Norway and will take place three years after its previous game with Fimbulwinter coming to an end and Ragnarok drawing ever closer. Atreus will be a teenager and will probably know more about his god hood from his experience and therefore could have many new abilities. It was revealed in the end of the last game that Atreus was in fact, Loki – the Norse god of mischief – so it will be interesting to see if the director Cory Barlog has expanded on this revelation and throughout the game Atreus learns more about his identity.
Tyr – the Norse god of war – was also revealed to be in the game from the trailer and could play a big part in the next game, Kratos and Atreus must face new threats such as Thor revealed in the secret ending at the end of God of War (2018) and their former friend Freyja who was the mother of Baldur whom Kratos and Atreus killed to protect her.
Cory Barlog posted many secret teasers such as on twitter a series of posts that the fans deciphered the first letter of each one spelling out “Ragnarok is coming” and some runes on the side of boat on a PlayStation dynamic theme saying “Ragnarok is coming”.
In the first Gameplay it was revealed that Kratos and Atreus will have the opportunity to use a dog sled as a means of travel, a completely new concept and fits in well with the setting of Fimbulwinter.
Some sad news for fans though as it was confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will be the final installation in the Norse mythology series but was also confirmed that all nine realms can be explored unlike the previous game where you could not access Asgard, Vanaheim or Svartalfheim.
Overall, God of War Ragnarok is anticipated to be one of the best games of all time and, judging by its sequel, will not disappoint. It will allow greater freedom and hopefully answer all the fans questions regarding the mysteries such as how freyja is able to harm the duo or how Kratos got to Midgard and who was Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, and how she knew everything, and if kratos will die in the next game shown by Faye’s drawings in Jotunheim at the end of God of War (2018).
