Lionel Messi has now been awarded his 7th Ballon d’Or putting him two ahead of his “rival” Cristiano Ronaldo who claimed his 5th Ballon d’Or back in 2017.The Ballon d’Or is a golden trophy in the shape of a ball, it is one of the most prestigious individual award for football players. It is awarded to a male player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year, voted by journalists around the world.
The top 5 players in the final ranking to win the award included N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, Jorginho, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi. Ronaldo failed to make the top 5 coming in one short at 6.The award ceremony didn’t go without controversy with people saying the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski deserved the award. Messi himself stated that Robert Lewandowski deserved the Ballon d’Or the previous year which was not given to anyone due to the pandemic.
