Dexter the father of 4 beautiful girls, Katie, Dionne, Naomi and Keisha and husband to his beautiful and kind wife, Yvonne for almost 35 years, as well as the creator of Radio Diamond, Manchester’s leading radio station, has passed away.
He leaves behind him an enduring legacy which of course is his lovely family and the Radio Diamond station which has helped so many people so far by raising money for good causes. His family will continue his legacy with continuing support, as Dexter did over many years for the people who really needed help and encouragement. Dexter raised money to support poor families and children not only in the UK, but in Afrika too, with the Radio Diamond Afrika Project. Dexter used the donations raised to provide clean water, clothes and food to hundreds of adults and children in needy communities. Please watch the video below so you can see how Dexter began his career. In brief he came to the UK with his brother to join his parents who had emigrated from Jamaica previously. He went to school in Moss Side and later having been taught alongside his father the trade of a baker, he broke his first boundary by opening a baker’s shop and grocery store, McFresh on Claremont Road, the first black business in the area. Breaking boundaries was what Dexter did best! He went on to create Radio Diamond in 2013, and now stands as the radio station Manchester loves best!
The following is a message to the world from his family:
To us, he was dad.
But Dexter / Mr Dex / Mr McFresh was a lot of things to a lot of people, positively impacting on the community and lives of so many.
The thing is, he was very low key with all that he did, so we don’t know the half of it!
We’d love to collate any stories, pictures or videos you have of him and get them made into a book.
So please send us anything you have-anecdotes, photos, whatever you’re happy to share. Please also share this link around: https://www.dailymanchester.com/tribute-to-dexter-mr-dex-mr-mcfresh/.
