Recently the metaverse has been a hot topic as Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook was changing its company name to Meta. The purpose of the re brand was part of the company’s efforts to move away from being known as just a social media company and instead focus on Mark Zuckerbeg’s plans for building the Metaverse.The company intends on spending $10 billion over the next year developing the technologies required for building the metaverse.
With all this money being invested in the metaverse what exactly is it?
The metaverse will be a combination of multiple elements of technology mainly including virtual reality,augmented reality and video where users “live” within a digital universe.Its intention is to get users working,playing and staying connected with friends through everything from concerts and conferences to virtual trips around the world through VR headsets.People are calling it the next internet with Mark Zuckerbeg stating that it could replace the internet.
Its estimated that it could take roughly 5-10 years before the main features of the metaverse become main stream.However, we have already seen elements of the metaverse such as VR headsets and live concerts through games i.e. Fortnite. The metaverse has received a lot of criticism however, as critics are calling it Dystopian and poses terrifying danger to humanity.People are worried about the power the metaverse could have as whoever is in control of the metaverse will have access to an unprecedented amount of data.
